George Wilton Robertson

George "Bud" Wilton Robertson was born September 9, 1921 in Macon, Georgia to Ruby (Smith) and Marion Robertson. He was the youngest of five children: Louise, Thelma, Isaac ("Ike"), Woodrow, then George. His father was a Revenuer in the hills of Georgia, tracking down illegal stills. He traveled a lot and passed away when George was just four years old. His mother lived to age 70. His brother, Woodrow, had a bad heart and lived to age 17.

George's family moved Kentucky where he attended school in a one room schoolhouse and helped his mother run the farm, looking after sheep and the vegetable garden. He moved to Detroit, Michigan in his 20's. There he worked at Hygrades Meat Packing as a Bookkeeper. His brother, Ike, joined the US Army Air Corp in the early days of World War n. He was a Tailgunner in a B-17 Bomber. Unfortunately, his plane was shot down, and he spent several years in a German prison camp. George was unable to enlist due to a physical condition with his eye. When Ike returned from the war, he and George went to work in the auto industry. George went to work at GM Diesel in their parts distribution center as a parts picker (on bicycle) and he was the Union Steward. Ike joined Ford Motor Company in the Engineering Department. George retired after 31 years with GM. During his years in Michigan, he lived in Dearborn and Livonia. He loved the Southwestern States and spent many years traveling back and forth to Arizona. In 1980 he purchased a condominium in Scottsdale, Arizona. Then in 1996 George and his sister, Thelma, moved permanently to Scottsdale where he stayed until 20 17. While visiting at Christmas, George decided to make New Braunfels, Texas his home and reside at Oaktree Assisted Living, with family members close by.

George has enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests, many of which he continues to this day. He spent many years traveling with his brother, Ike, and saw much of the United States and Canada. They once hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back out in a day. He has a strong interest in photography and made picture frames for his photos. He was an avid gardener, growing vegetables and flowers. He enjoyed playing baseball and followed several major league teams. George likes horseracing and once had a part interest in a race horse. He is a numismatist, with an extensive coin collection. He played golf well into his 90's and enjoys watching golf today. George loves nature and conservation, visiting nearly every National Park in America. His travels have taken him to Costa Rica, Mexico, the Panama Canal, and six trips to Alaska.

Funeral services will be at 1:00pm on Sunday, January 23, 2022 at Smith Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Todd Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow at Cothran Cemetery.

Friends may visit the family from 11:00am to service hour on Sunday at the funeral home.
